The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), OSHA, and other professional organizations publish guideline s about office chairs. Even if the balls are placed on a ring (base) they have a tendency to roll, causing employees to lose balance and fall. In another study, many corporations and ERs reported serious injuries due to exercise balls. The recall happened because there were a large number of safety complaints, and 47 people reported fractures and other injuries. In fact, over 3 million over-inflated exercise balls were recalled in 2006. ![]() Recordable Injuries Waiting To Happen/Known Safety Issues: When people sit on over-inflated exercise balls, they have been known to pop.There are known and recognized ergonomic and safety hazards from employees using the balls instead of office ergonomic chairs. Employers and managers have an obligation under OSHAs General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) to keep the workplace free from known and recognized ergonomic hazards.Here are the TOP FIVE REASONS I give for banning exercise balls: The next question clients ask is: "What reasons am I going to give people? I suggest to managers that if employees are using them in offices, to let them know that exercise balls are not allowed and they should bring them home. Here's what I recommend to managers: "Exercise balls belong in a gym and not in the office!" In my opinion, exercise balls should not be used to replace good ergonomic chairs.
