I’m also excited about the fact that he’s going on a book tour and I’m going along with Al and Bart to watch him speak in London (and probably Oxford as well). Randall also comes at problems from directions that I wouldn’t have ever expected, like extreme pole vaulting…. My favourite part of it is that he roots everything (mostly) in actual science (as well he should having studied Physics and worked at NASA). In this book Randall looks at simple things and goes into some weird places about how you might do that simple thing. I bought both “what if” (Gaz, can I have my book back please) and “thing explainer” and I’m really happy with his third book. I’ve loved Randall’s most well known work, XKCD, for many many years now and the below Sudo comic is one of my favourite and most reused. 100dollarhacker has updated the log for Atomic Force Microscope - from ground up.I was super excited yesterday to get a message from Amazon to tell me that my pre-ordered copy of Randall Munro’s “ how to” was being delivered.lion mclionhead has updated the log for 3D printed blower.Giulio Pons liked Digital Bicycle Horn With Customizable Sound.Jake Wachlin wrote a comment on Introduction to Ultra-Low Power Electronics.Jacob David C Cunningham has updated the project titled Custom Pi Zero HQ Handheld Camera.Drone on When Is A Typewriter A Printer? We saw this done at one of the talks at the Hackaday SuperConference 2018. The comic look of the plots conveys the idea that they don’t represent actual data, perhaps only a concept. Plt.plot(,, 'black')īeyond generating humorous graphs for those with little artistic talent, these plots can also be used instead of hand-drawn sketches to indicate a simple model or expected result. Plt.text(0, 0.25, 'Article on xkcd() published') Plt.ylabel('Downloads of "humor sans" font') In fact, the featured image above was generated with this minimal script: #!/usr/bin/env python3 There will undoubtedly be similar incantations for other operating systems. On one of our linux boxes, we were able to do this with a simple: sudo apt-get install fonts-humor-sans The documentation recommends that you install the “Humor Sans” font for best effect. If you already have a plot generated with Matplotlib, activating xkcd-mode is as simple as calling a method on the pyplot object: matplotlib.pyplot. A recent reddit thread reminded us that you can generate a similar look for your own data (humorous or otherwise) in Python using Matplotlib. To be honest, we can’t get enough of them. ![]() Their distinctive, Tufteian style delivers the information – in this case, a punch line – without excessive decoration. The humorous plots in his xkcd webcomic are one of the favorite parts for many readers. Certainly understands the power of graphical representation of data.
